In February 2012, the Albanian government inaugurated two innovative services, M-tax and e-payment, intending to save taxpayers' time costs as well as to increase transparency and efficiency of the Albanian tax administration. M-tax is a ALL13 million ($121,000) investment which enables taxpayers to check their fiscal situation from their mobile phones and help them to declare and pay taxes at the due date and without presenting themselves to the tax administration desks.

This application, in mobile application (Apple IPhone or iPad) and Android, was realised by the General Tax Department.

On the other hand, e-payment, a ALL10 million investment, is directly related to the second-tier banks which make the payments to the tax administration on behalf of the businesses.

Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, who took part in the inauguration ceremony of these new services, stressed that they represent the first big step towards the implementation of M-Albania, the project of the next four years, which will enable taxpayers to access all the tax services from their mobile phones.

The prime minister called on the adaption of these services by the customs administration as soon as possible.
