Named in ITR’s Global Tax 50 last year, Logan Wort continues to play a crucial role in African governments’ efforts to simplify the OECD’s pillar one proposals.
Many African governments have long argued that the OECD’s plans for taxing the digital economy did not do enough to reallocate revenue to their countries or did not enable them to collect sufficient tax compared to developed countries.
As executive secretary of the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), Wort works to advance international tax reform and to understand the priorities of African tax administrations.
In November, the UN voted to pave the way for a new tax convention advocated by a number of African governments – which came as good news for ATAF. The resolution may allow the UN to take on a much greater role in global tax matters while supporting the needs of developing countries.
As developed countries are expected to favour the OECD, the UN General Assembly vote marked a success for ATAF and showed how African countries can make their voices heard worldwide.
