Dan Neidle made a name for himself as one of the leading UK tax lawyers, however, he has gone on to establish his own non-profit called Tax Policy Associates.
After 25 years of service, Neidle retired early from international law firm Clifford Chance. He had been promoted to the firm’s head of tax in 2020, but he decided to leave just two years later and set up Tax Policy Associates.
Something of a one-man show, Tax Policy Associates is a kind of think tank rather than just another tax consultancy. It does offer policy analysis and advice, but Neidle takes no fees for his expertise. He favours income and wealth redistribution, though he calls himself a ‘tax realist’.
He described his beliefs when he launched the non-profit: “I believe the UK should have a larger and more generous welfare state, and a greater degree of redistribution, and tax should rise to pay for it.
“That should be achieved with as few taxes as possible, and they should be simple and have as few exemptions as possible,” he added.
Neidle aims to improve UK tax policy by working closely with politicians and journalists. He has highlighted flaws in the windfall tax and capital gains tax regime and laid out how to reform both.
Tax Policy Associates seeks to counter the balance of easy answers in fiscal reform. So far, Neidle has shown he can make waves inside and outside the tax profession.
